Affidavits, October 1931, concerning the appointment of Dr. Thomas Jefferson Turpin (1822-1893) of Powhatan County, Virginia, to the Confederate States of America Board of Medical Examiners for Powhatan County. Affidavit, 28 October 1931, of Augustine Royall (ca. 1850-1935) of Richmond, Virginia, who served in Company C of the Virginia Military Institute Cadets, noting that he was Turpin's brother-in-law. Affidavit, 30 October 1931, of J. Haskins Hobson (ca. 1846-1937) of Powhatan County, who served in Company E, 4th Virginia Cavalry. Affidavit, 31 October 1931, of W. M. Tilman (ca. 1847-1935) of Powhatan County, who served in the Goochland Artillery, Gray's Battery. All three affidavits also state that Dr. William Turpin, no relation to Thomas Jefferson Turpin, and Dr. William Robert Nelson were also appointed to the board for Powhatan County

Biographical or historical data
Thomas Jefferson Turpin was born 2 August 1822 in Powhatan County, Virginia, to William A. Turpin (1786-1864) and Rebecca Smith Turpin (ca. 1798-1870). He studied medicine and became a successful physician in Powhatan County. He married first Sarah "Sallie" W. Eustace (1826-1855) 21 October 1851, and they apparently had no children. He married second Mary Garland Royall (1842-1910) 23 November 1859, and they had six or seven children. Turpin died in Powhatan County 12 March 1893 and was buried in a family plot.
