Biographical or historical data
James Irwin Stephens was born in Appomattox County, Virginia in October 1869 to James L. (b. 1840) and Josephine E. Stephens (ca. 1852-1895). He graduated from Virginia Military Institute after 5 years of study in 1892. Following graduation he became a chemistry teacher and then worked at a hotel in Augusta County, Virginia. He died in 1902.
