Biographical or historical data
Joel Vail Willson was born on 20 November 1827, the son of Joshua and Charity Drake Willson of Farmington, Ontario County, New York. Sometime around 1849 Joel V. Willson moved south and eventually settled in Petersburg, Virginia. He married Cornelia Indiana Harper (1833-1887) of Halifax, North Carolina, on 3 June 1852. They had a son named William who was born in Richmond on 27 May 1854.
