James H. Weaver was born 24 May 1849 in Ashe County, North Carolina, to Hiram Weaver (1814-1873) and Zilpha Ashley Weaver (1817-1889). Weaver received a rudimentary education in public schools, and received more education from various Methodist ministers who stayed at his home. He became a teacher for a while, before becoming a Methodist minister himself. Weaver served as a minister in southwestern Virginia, northeastern Tennessee, and in western North Carolina. He married Jennie L. Burkett (1851-1914) 24 December 1872, and they had one son. Weaver died in Hickory, North Carolina, in 1917.
