Doctor Leonard Crawford Crump was born in New Kent County, Virginia about 1820. He became a doctor and during the Civil War was a surgeon at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. After the war, Crump settled in Richmond and practiced medicine. Crump married first Mary J. Crump in 1845. He married second Emily A Savage (1829-1917). Crump and his wives had 6 children. He died 6 February 1899. During Crump's tenure at Chimborazo, he served under Doctor James B. McCaw, who oversaw the day-to-day operations of the hospital, as well as served as the head surgeon. McCaw, born in 1823, was a prominent Richmond physician both before and after the Civil War. He died 13 August 1906. Chimborazo was perhaps the best run and most famous hospital in the South during the Civil War.
