Letter, 19 December 1847, from John Glassell (1780-1850) and his wife Sarah Scott Ashton Glassell (1797-1869) of Culpeper County, Virginia, to his daughter by his second wife, Mildred Smith Glassell Covell (b. 1823) of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, concerning the death of Covell's newborn infant and her own health. John Glassell offers his religious thoughts and his advice on how to protect her health. Sarah Glassell also offers her thoughts and suggests that Covell come to Culpeper County for a visit. Both mention Covell's sister Louisa Glassell (b. 1816) who is visiting Covell and both provide family and social news

Biographical or historical data
John Glassell was born 29 October 1780 in Madison County, Virginia. He was a successful planter in Culpeper County, Virginia. Glassell married first Louisa Richard Brown (1785-1818) 11 September 1806, and they had six children, including Louisa Brown Glassell (Eno) (b. 1816). He married second Margaret Christian Scott Lee (1783-1843) 27 June 1821, and they had two children, including Mildred Smith Glassell Covell (b. 1823). He married third Sarah Scott Ashton (1797-1869) 20 November 1845, and they had no children. Glassell died in Culpeper County 30 September 1850.
