Biographical or historical data
Jefferson Davis was born 3 June 1808 in Christian County, Kentucky, and moved with his family to Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Davis graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1828. He served in the Black Hawk War, and resigned his commission in 1835. Davis established his plantation Brierfield in Warren County, Mississippi. He was elected to Congress in 1844, and resigned his seat to serve as the commander of the 1st Regiment of Mississippi Riflemen during the Mexican War. He was appointed to the United States Senate in 1847 and resigned in 1851. President Franklin Pierce appointed him Secretary of War and he served from 1853 to 1857. In 1857, David returned to the Senate, resigning in 1861, when the Civil War began. Davis was elected President of the Confederate States of America and served from 1861 to 1865, the only man to hold the office. After the war, Davis returned to Mississippi and settled a Beauvoir near Biloxi, Mississippi. He married first Sarah Knox Taylor (ca. 1814-1835), daughter of Zachary Taylor, 17 June 1835, and they had no children. He married second Varina Ann Banks Howell (1826-1906) 28 February 1845, and they had six children. Davis died 6 December 1889 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was buried in Metairie Cemetery. He was reinterred in Hollywood Cemtery, Richmond, Virginia, in 1893.
