Letters, 1–19 August 1857, from Jeb Stuart (1833–1864), Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory, to Flora Stuart (1836–1923), his wife. Letters, along with notes from Stuart’s diary, were written when Stuart was a first lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, U.S. Cavalry. They relate the events of 13–29 July and 1–18 August, when his unit was on an expedition against the Cheyenne Indians in the Kansas Territory

Biographical or historical data
Jeb Stuart (1833-1864) graduated from West Point in 1854. He served in the U.S. Army Cavalry in Texas, and Kansas from 1855-1861, rising to the rank of Captain. He resigned with Virginia's secession and was appointed Lt. Colonel in the Confederate States Army until his death near Richmond during Civil War.
