John Gray was born 4 March 1769 in Cartcraig, Scotland, to William Gray (1731-1778) and Isabella Bowie Gray (ca. 1742-1820). He emigrated to Virginia in 1784, then three years later returned to Scotland. Finally Gray returned to Petersburg, Virginia, in 1790 and became a merchant. Amassing a considerable fortune through business ventures and inheritances, he purchased "Traveller's Rest," in Stafford County in 1810 and moved his family there. Gray married Lucy Robb (ca. 1773-1851) 11 or 14 December 1792, and they had six children. Gray died in Stafford County 18 July 1848 and was buried in the family cemetery at Travellers Rest.
