  • Of particular note in the correspondence is a letter concerning an emancipated slave and the legality of the manumission which was being contested by the heirs of her former owner. Also included is a letter from Jared Williams (1766-1831), a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, concerning the amending of the constitution and the admittance of Missouri to the Union. There is also a letter from William Wirt (1772-1834) in which he discusses his legal fees

Biographical or historical data
Meshack Sexton was born on 25 January 1749. He married Hannah Steer in Frederick County, Virginia on 7 April 1768. They were members of the Society of Friends. In 1801, they were granted a certificate of transfer to Westland Monthly Meeting in Washington County, Pennsylvania. That same year, Hannah Sexton was received at Redstone Monthly Meeting in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. In 1811, she was granted a certificate of transfer to Short Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Ohio. Joseph Sexton was born circa 1773, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He died in 1836 in Greene County, Ohio.
