Biographical or historical data
Edward Lorraine was born in New Orleans in 1818. His parents moved the family to Richmond, Virginia when he was young, and he graduated from The College of William and Mary. Lorraine was then employed in the corps of engineers constructing the James River and Kanawha Canal in Richmond, and was ultimately appointed Chief Engineer in 1854. He died in Richmond on 29 December 1872.
