Biographical or historical data
Thomas Jefferson Pretlow was born 3 August 1813 at "Beechwood" in Southampton County, Virginia, to Thomas Pretlow (1786-1843) and Jane Watson Denson Pretlow (1790-1874). Pretlow attended the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from there in 1834. Pretlow was a successful physician and farmer in Southampton County. He served as Southampton County's delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1852 to 1853, and as a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Virginia from 1865 to 1872. He owned Ashlawn-Highlands in Albemarle County, Virginia. Pretlow was a prominent political leader in Southampton County during Reconstruction. He married Clarissa Ashton Garrett (1816-1872) 16 October 1835, and they had seven children. Pretlow died in Southampton County 12 March 1876.
