Biographical or historical data
Douglas Presbyterian Church was organized in 1840 by New School members of Briery Presbyterian Church in Charlotte County. By 1870, this church had dissolved and fifteen members had rejoined the Briery congregation. In 1862, the Reverend Thomas Peck, a Presbyterian minister, began preaching in a Methodist church in Prince Edward County near Douglas Church. This Methodist Church burned in 1873 and the Methodists were financially unable to rebuild the church. The Presbyterians, therefore, petitioned the Roanoke Presbytery to move the abandoned Douglas Church to the burned site. The Roanoke Presbytery agreed and services were first held at the new site on 17 August 1873. In April 1874, the group petitioned the Roanoke Presbytery to be formally recognized as a congregation, which took effect on 17 November 1875.
