Papers, 1779 and 1819-1870, of the White family of Fluvanna County, Virginia, consisting of accounts, bills of sale, certificates, correspondence, deeds, judicial records, plats, receipts, and subscription lists. Accounts and judicial records contain orders from the Louisa County, Virginia, Superior Court of Law to John White (1786-1867) ordering him to pay certain court costs, and accounts of John White with the Fluvanna County Court; also records of overseers of the poor for Fluvanna County. Deeds and plats include a deed, 4 May 1779, for 26 acres in Fluvanna County from Thomas Baley [Bailey] to Thomas Thomason, and plats are for land in Fluvanna County. Papers contain bills of sale and receipts for the purchase of slaves by John White; also a certificate stating that Edward Gwinn is a free man of color. Subscription lists are for the purchase of clothes for Robert Lilly, a Baptist preacher; payment to Martin L. Holland for teaching school; and for the purchase of religious tracts. Correspondence, mainly to James P. White (1812-1887), concerns the settlement of an estate, the purchase of guano, a trip through New York, springs in Bath County, Virginia, and other business matters

Biographical or historical data
John White was born in 1786. He was a farmer in Fluvanna County, Virginia. White was active in the Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for Lyle's Baptist Church and agent for a national tract society. He was a captain in the county militia and served as overseer of the poor. White died in 1867. He married Joanna Wilson (1788-1849) 22 December 1807, and they had children, including James P. White. James P. White was born in 1812. He was a farmer and a wheelwright in Fluvanna County. He married Sophia J. Holland (d. 1887) 11 February 1835. James P. White died 15 October 1887.
