Harris records his thoughts on his family, religion, his profession as a merchant, and social life in Cumberland County and Powhatan County, Virginia. He discusses the deaths of his parents Joseph S. John Harris was born 3 May 1826 in Cumberland County, Virginia, to Joseph S. Harris (ca. 1781-1856) and Elizabeth Harris (ca. 1784-1855). Harris became a merchant in Clinton in Cumberland County. He also served as a justice for the county, being elected in 1856.
