Notes, 1855, made by William Holcombe Bolling (1837-1899), a student at the University of Virginia, on book II (Of the Distribution of Wealth), chapter V (Of the manner, in which revenue is distributed by amongst society) of A TREATISE ON POLITICAL ECONOMY; OR THE PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND CONSUMPTION OF WEALTH by the French economist Jean Baptiste Say (1767-1832). Notes were found in an uncatalogued copy of Say's book which is inscribed "University of Va/ Will H. Bolling / University / Va. / 1855-1856 / Bedford Cty / Va." Also a pencilled notation stating "bought by J. Norman Powell at sale of books of W. H. Bolling 1899."

Biographical or historical data
William Holcombe Bolling was born in Bedford County, Virginia, 29 May 1837, to Archibald Bolling and Anne E. Wigginton Bolling. He attended private schools and the University of Virginia. Bolling studied law under John White Brockenbrough (1806-1877) and was admitted to the bar. After the Civil War, Bolling moved to Wythe County, Virginia, where he practiced law and eventually became judge of the county court. Bolling married Sallie Spears White (1843-1925) 18 September 1860, and they had eleven children, including Edith Bolling (Galt Wilson) (1872-1961), who was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924). Bolling died in Wytheville, Virginia, 6 July 1899.
