Biographical or historical data
The Associate and Reformed Presbyterian groups originated in Scotland as a protest against corruption in the established Church of Scotland. In the American colonies, the two bodies negotiated for a union which resulted in the organization of the Associate Reformed Synod in Philadelphia in November 1782. In 1803, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church organized its Synod of the South with the Virginia Presbytery as one of its units, and Old Providence as one of its churches. For more information see, THE BRICK CHURCH ON TIMBER RIDGE, by George W. Diehl, 1975.
