Diary, 1849-1852, is a trail log recording Watts' journey as a member of a wagon train heading to California and contains observations on distance traveled, direction, weather, topography, care and condition of stock and provisions, and notable events, as well as Watts' stay in California mining for gold and his journey to Oregon to meet his father's wagon train. Papers also include Watts' accounts, 1856-1857; Watts' addresses in Oregon in 1852 and 1854; miscellaneous newspaper clippings; letter, 16 May 1860, from Watts to the clerk of Harrison County, Kentucky, concerning real property in that county; medicinal recipes; list, 1857-1859, of personal property taxed; a poem on the death of a father, possibly Watts', from alcoholism; diary, 1877, of a journey to Portland, Oregon; and a photograph of Ben Watts

Ben Watts traveled to California as part of a wagon train in 1849 and mined for gold for a few years there. He then moved to Columbia County, Oregeon, where he later became a judge and a railroad agent.
