Journal, 1770, of Mary Cary Ambler (1732/3-1781) while staying with her sister Sarah Cary Fairfax at Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia, consisting of entries relating to social and personal activities in Fairfax County. Includes her account of traveling with her children to Baltimore, Maryland, to receive smallpox inoculations, with a description of the trip and of Baltimore. Volume also includes journal, 1763, of George William Fairfax (1724-1787), Ambler's brother-in-law, while living in Yorkshire, England, recording his social activities, the weather, and Fairfax's accounts. Journals are part of THE DAILY JOURNAL: OR THE GENTLEMAN'S AND TRADESMAN'S COMPLETE ANNUAL ACCOUNT-BOOK FOR THE POCKET OR DESK. Mary Cary was born in 1732/3 to Wilson Cary and Sarah Cary. She married Edward Ambler in 1754, and they had seven children. She died in 1781. Her brother-in-law, George William Fairfax was born in 1724 in the Bahamas. Educated in England, Fairfax came to Virginia to live with his father William Fairfax (1691-1757) at Belvoir. Fairfax became the agent for the Fairfax proprietary lands in 1748 and held that position until 1760. Fairfax married Sarah Cary (1730-1811). They traveled about England from 1760 to 1763. Upon his return, Fairfax served on the Governor's Council in 1768 to 1769. The Fairfaxes returned to England in 1773, and their return to Virginia was prevented by the outbreak of the American Revolution. Fairfax died in Bath, England 3 April 1787.
