William Skinner Simpson was born in 1795 in London, England to Reverend Robert Simpson and Sarah Lee Simpson. He emigrated in 1819 to Petersburg, Virginia, where he married his shipboard companion Mary Levick (1795-1867) 23 September 1820. In Petersburg, Simpson worked as an insurance agent. He and his wife had at least two sons. Simpson died 20 July 1868 in Petersburg, Virginia, and was buried in Blandford Cemetery.
