Summary
Papers, 1961 and n.d., consisting of a notebook and a letter belonging to an unidentified woman originally from Cantril, Iowa. The notebook was used for multiple purposes, including a month-long diary, Sept. 1-22 (year unknown), describing the author’s military service as a teacher, mainly of reading and writing, to soldiers. Class schedules and rolls are also recorded. Another section holds the author's reminiscences of moving from Iowa to Washington, D.C., in 1917 to work in the Provost Marshal General's Office. Her detailed recollections cover acquaintances and social encounters; impressions of Washington; a visit to Beaufort, South Carolina; and her job duties. Other items in the notebook include a story about draft dodgers in the mountains of Arkansas, and a partial draft of a letter asking a Mr. Cobb for help after the writer's husband, a printer, was arrested for working on a Sunday. A separate letter, 3 July 1961, was written from a woman named Lea to another named Helen. It is unclear whether either of these women was the one who kept the notebook
