Typescript copy of the regimental order book, 1813, of the 5th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel Armistead T. Mason. The order book covers the formation of the regiment, copies of brigade, general, and regimental orders, muster rolls, expense reports, correspondence, regimental meeting minutes, and regimental courts proceedings which lists fines and punishments levied against members for various reasons.   • The 5th Virginia Regiment was compiled of county militia regiments combined into a single regiment and ordered to serve in the brigade stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, in 1813. Armistead T. Mason (1787-1819) colonel of the 57th Virginia militia from Loudoun County served as the 5th Virginia's commanding officer.
  • Armistead Thomson Mason (1787-1819), was the son of Stevens Thomson Mason, and was born in Louisa County, Virginia. He attended William and Mary College in 1807. Returning to the family home in Loudoun County, Virginia, Mason commanded the 57th Virginia militia (Loudoun County) and commanded the 5th Virginia Regiment during the War of 1812. Mason later served as brigadier general of the Virginia Militia. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1816-1817, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William B. Giles. Was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1816, which gave rise to several duels, and later resulted in his being killed in a duel with his brother-in-law, John Mason McCarty, at Blandensburg, Maryland, on 6 February 1819.
