Biographical or historical data
James Lawrence Cabell was born 26 August 1813 in Nelson County, Virginia, to George Cabell (1774-1827) and Susanna Wyatt Cabell (d. 1817). He attended the University of Virginia from 1829 to 1833 and received an M.A. He studied in the medical department of the University of Maryland at Baltimore and graduated with an M.D. in 1834. Cabell continued his studies in Baltimore; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Paris, France. The University of Virginia appointed him professor of anatomy, surgery, and physiology in 1837. In 1849, Cabell was reappointed professor of surgery and physiology, positions he held until his death. From 1861 to 1865, he was chief surgeon of the Confederate hospitals located in Charlottesville, Virginia. He received an LL.D. from Hampden-Sidney College in 1873, and served as president of the National Board of Health from 1879 to 1884. Cabell married Margaret Gibbons (d. 1874) 5 February 1839. Cabell died in Charlottesville 13 August 1889.
