Biographical or historical data
A prominent family in Fluvanna County, Virginia, the Sclaters held many positions of authority, serving as deputy sheriffs, sheriffs, and clerks of the court. They were often chosen to serve as administrators and executors of estates. John Sclater (1806-1886) served as deputy sheriff and sheriff. William Sclater (1819-1884) served as sheriff and clerk of the county court. The McCoull family, which lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, was related by marriage.
