Biographical or historical data
Willie Jones was born 25 May 1741 in Surry County, Virginia, to Robert "Robin" Jones (1718-1766) and Sarah Cobb Jones. He moved with his family to Northampton County, North Carolina in the early 1750s. Jones attended Eton, and upon his return to North Carolina settled in Halifax County. He represented Halifax County in the House of Commons in 1767 and 1771, and received appointments from the colony's royal governors. However, when the Revolution came, Jones quickly sided with the North Carolina Whigs. He was elected to the five provincial congresses and represented Halifax County in the House from 1777 to 1780. Jones also represented North Carolina in the Continental Congress in 1780. He was a state senator in 1782, 1784, and 1788. Jones led North Carolina's Antifederalist forces in the state ratification convention, waging a battle that he lost in 1789 when the state ratified the federal constitution. Jones helped found the state capital of Raleigh as well as the University of North Carolina. Jones married Mary Monfort, and they had thirteen children, only five of whom survived to maturity. Jones died in Raleigh 18 June 1801.
