Two transcript copies of extracts from the journal and diary, 1839-1878, of William Thomas Leavell (1813-1899), providing a brief autobiographical sketch of his early life, education, entry into the ministry, detailing his years as an Episcopal minister in Charles City, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties, Virginia, and Jefferson County, West Virginia; and discussing his wife and children. Includes an account of Leavell's experiences in Jefferson County during the Civil War and an account of his role in helping to create the Episcopal diocese of West Virginia. Transcripts were made by George MacLaren Brydon (1875-1963), historian of the Episcopal Church in Virginia

Biographical or historical data
William Thomas Leavell was born 11 September 1813 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He was ordained a minister in the Episcopal Church about 1838, and served Westover Parish in Charles City County, Virginia, until 1853. He served a parish in Madison and Rappahannock Counties, Virginia, and by 1858, he relocated to Jefferson County, (West) Virginia, serving churches there and in Berkeley County, (West) Virginia. Leavell married first Anne Yates (1815-1858) 18 November 1847, and they had six children. He married second Emma Wynkoop (d. 1906) 22 May 1883. Leavell died 25 August 1899, and was buried at Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town, West Virginia.
