- Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York, 5 December 1782 to Abraham Van Buren (1736-1817)and Maria Hoes Van Buren (1746-1818). He attended the village schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar and and practiced in Kinderhook in 1803. Van Buren moved to Hudson, New York, in 1809. He served as surrogate of Columbia County, New York from 1808 to 1813. Van Buren was elected to the state senate in 1813 and remained to 1820. He was also attorney general of New York from 1816 to 1819, and a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1821. Elected to the United States Senate in 1821, Van Buren served until 1828, when he was elected Governor. He served as governor from January to March 1829, then resigned to serve as Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President Andrew Jackson. Van Buren was elected as Vice President of the United States on the ticket with Andrew Jackson and served from 1833 to 1837. He succeeded Jackson as President, serving from 1837 to 1841. He lost his reelection bid in 1840. In 1844 he lost the Democratic Party nomination, then ran for president on the Free-Soil ticket in 1848. Van Buren retired to Kinderhook, where he died July 24, 1862. Van Buren was interred in Kinderhook Cemetery. He married Hannah Hoes (1783-1819) 21 February 1807, and they had 4 sons.
