Thomas Bryce Ashcraft was born 21 November 1882 in Union County, North Carolina to Vernon Allen Ashcraft and Henrietta Hamilton Ashscraft. He graduated from Wingate High School in 1903 and from Wake Forest College in 1906. Ashcraft returned to Wingate to teach, but in 1907, he entered Johns Hopkins University from where he received his ph.d. in mathmatics in 1911. Ashcraft accepted a position at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he taught for the next 38 years and served as treasurer for the athletic department. In 1955, Ashcraft moved to Monroe, North Carolina. He married Louise Moltz in June 1912, and they had one son. Ashcraft died 17 December 1960.
