Biographical or historical data
Byrd Charles Willis was born 5 April 1847 in Pensacola, Florida, to George Willis (1809-1861) and Sally Innes Smith Willis (1820-1881). He attended Virginia Military Institute, but resigned to enter the Confederate Army. He enlisted 1 April 1864 in Company B, 9th Virginia Cavalry, and was wounded at the battle of Spotsylvania. Willis took the oath of allegiance and was paroled 22 May 1865. He lived in Alabama after the war, where he married Lelia Mann (1857-1880) 30 April 1876, before returning to Orange County, Virginia. They had 3 children. Willis married Ann Crenshaw (1861-1951) 30 December 1894. Willis lived at Clarens in Fairfax County, then moved to Alexandria, Virginia. He died in Richmond 19 December 1911, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
