Biographical or historical data
William Belser Spong, Jr., (1920-1997) was born in Portsmouth, Va. on September 29, 1920. He attended Hampden-Sydney College, University of Virginia, and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a member of the Virginia house of delegates 1954-1955 and a member of the Virginia senate 1956-1966. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1966, for the six-year term commencing January 3, 1967. He was unsuccessful in his bid for reelection in 1972. He was a law professor and dean at the Marshall-Whyte School of Law and College of William and Mary from 1976-1985 and appointed interim president of Old Dominion University in 1988.
