Biographical or historical data
Varina Anne Banks Howell was born 7 May 1826 at her family's home, the Briers, in Natchez, Mississippi, to William Burr Howell and Margaret Louisa Kemp Howell (d. 1867). She married Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) 26 February 1845 at her family home. Varina Davis became a strong proponent of her husband's political career, actively supporting him while he served in the United States Senate and as President of the Confederacy. When Jefferson Davis was imprisoned after the Civil War ended, Varina Davis worked to have him freed. She helped him defend his reputation and his actions during the war until his death, and continued that defense until her own death in New York, New York, 16 October 1906. Varina Davis was buried next to her husband at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. The Davises had six children.
