William McKenzie Clark was born in Bertie County, North Carolina ca. 1821. He was the son of William McKenzie Clark (1778-1836) and Martha Boddie Williams (1796-1843). He married Martha Harwell Pettway in Halifax County, North Carolina on 8 January 1845. Clark was a student in the medical department of Hampden-Sidney College in Richmond, Virginia from 1852-1853. During this time, the family moved from Warren County, North Carolina to Canton, Wilcox County, Alabama.
