Biographical or historical data
Mathew Bates Nowlin operated this store at Clover Hill, now Appomattox. The records indicate that Benjamin Hall Nowlin, his nephew, as well as other family members may have been involved with the business. Mathew Bates Nowlin was born in October 1797 and died of pneumonia on 14 April 1856 at Campbell County, Virginia. He was the son of James and Rainey Downey Nowlin. He married Elizabeth Hook Preston
