Weddell (1841-1883) , concerning the conferral of a Doctor of Divinity degree on Reverend Weddell. Wise also encloses an extract of the minutes of the meeting of the faculty, 17 January 1878, when the resolution was passed relevant to Reverend Weddell. The extract is signed by Benjamin S. Ewell (1810-1894), President of The College of William and Mary

Biographical or historical data
Richard Alsop Wise was born 2 September 1843 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Henry A. Wise (1806-1876) and Sarah Sergeant Wise (d. 1850). He attended private schools in Richmond, Virginia, Harrison's Academy in Albemarle County, Virginia, and the College of William and Mary. During the Civil War, he served as a private in the Confederate cavalry and as assistant inspector general of (General Henry A) Wise's Brigade. After the war, Richard Wise graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1867 and afterwards taught at the College of William and Mary from 1869 to 1881. He was a physician at the Eastern State Lunatic Asylum from 1882 to 1885. After serving in the House of Delegates from 1885 to 1887, Wise was clerk of the Williamsburg and James City County courts. Active in Republican party politics in Virginia, he attended every state Republican party convention between 1879 and 1900, as well as the national Republican conventions of 1892, 1896, and 1900. Wise successfully contested the election of his opponent to both the 55th and 56th Congresses and served from 1898 to 1899 and 1900. Wise died in Williamsburg, Virginia, 21 December 1900, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
