Papers, 1862-1863, of Robert Dabney Minor (1827-1871) consisting of a telegram, 9 March 1862, sent to his wife Landonia Randolph Minor (1830-1912) informing her of the Confederate ironclad "Virginia's" victory over the Union ironclad "Monitor" and telling her that he was slightly wounded; and a letter24 February 1863, also to his wife giving a detailed account of conditions in Fredericksburg and the results of recent severe battles there. He describes the positions of the two armies, the countryside, shallow graves of dead Yankees and unburied corpses, and the destruction in town. He notes that President Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) has proposed to send Minor's brother George (1808-1879) to Selma, Alabama, to take charge of the National Foundry there

Biographical or historical data
Robert Dabney Minor was born 13 September 1827 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Garrett Minor (1776-1832) and Eliza McWilliams Minor (d. 1832). He was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy in 1841, and achieved the rank of lieutenant in 1855. When the Civil War began, he resigned and entered the Confederate Navy, serving in the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography. He was the Flag Lieutenant aboard the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimac) during its confrontation with the Union ironclad Monitor. After the Virginia was burned, he continued in the Ordnance Bureau. In 1864-1865, Minor was the flag lieutenant and ordnance officer of the James River Squadron. After the war ended, he tried farming before being appointed chief engineer of the James River improvments. Minor married Landonia Randolph (1830-1912) 17 December 1850, and they had five children. Minor died 25 November 1871 in Richmond, Virginia.
