Biographical or historical data
  • The Leitch family lived at Mt. Ida, Buckingham County, from 1833 to 1909. William Leitch (1791-1871) purchased the property in 1833 from the Ross family who had acquired it in 1805 from the original owner and builder, William Cannon. The Mt. Ida property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (a copy of the nomination form is on file with the Virginia Dept. of Historic Resources).
  • Thomas Maurice Leitch (1826-1886) was the son of William Leitch (1791-1871) and Mary Ann Langhorne Leitch (1805-1857). Thomas Leitch inherited Mt. Ida in Buckingham County upon his father's death. Thomas attended the University of Virginia and later served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army. He married first Mary Jane Fuqua (1830-1860) 27 November 1849, and they had four children, including William Leitch (1850-1909) and Annie Fuqua Leitch (Lancaster) (1856-1925). He married second Martha Goodrich Spencer (1839-1892) 19 February 1861, and they had nine children, including Thomas Spencer Leitch (1865-1907), Langhorne Leitch (1866-1897), and James Leitch (1877-1955).
