Biographical or historical data
William McGee was born in Richmond, Virginia, 23 December 1821. An orphan, he received little education. About 1839, he attended a revival and became interested in religion and active in the Methodist church. In 1843 he became an itinerant preacher. He served several congregations in Virginia, including ones in Hampton, Norfolk, Lynchburg, Smithfield, Charles City and New Kent Counties, Surry County, Princess Anne County, and Northumberland County. McGee married first Martha C. Winfree (d. 1884) in 1847, and they had four children, all of whom died young. He married second Roberta Spratley in 1885. McGee died in Northumberland County, Virginia, 2 April 1891.
