Biographical or historical data
St. Mark's Parish was created in 1730 by a division of St. George's Parish in Spotsylvania County. In 1734 Orange County was cut from Spotsylvania County along the line which marked the division of the two parishes, putting St. Mark's Parish in the new county. In 1740 St. Mark's Parish was divided for the formation of St. Thomas' Parish. Culpeper County was formed in 1749 from the portion of Orange County within the bounds of St. Mark's Parish, making Culpeper County and St. Mark's Parish coterminous. At this time Culpeper County included the area of the present Madison County (1793) and Rappahannock County (1833). For more information see, A HISTORY OF ST. MARK'S PARISH, CULPEPER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, by the Reverend Philip Slaughter, 1877, and also, GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTES ON CULPEPER COUNTY . . . HISTORY OF ST. MARK'S PARISH, by Raleigh Travers Green, 1958.
