Biographical or historical data
Calohill Mennis was born in 1796 in Bedford County, Virginia. He became a successful lawyer and represented Bedford County in the House of Delegates from 1821 to 1823 and from 1828 to 1829. Mennis was also a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830, until ill-health forced his resignation 26 November 1829. He married Ann Leftwich (1802-1829), also of Bedford County. Mennis died 19 December 1829 in Bedford County, less than ten months after his wife.
