Biographical or historical data
Shelton Hardaway Short III was born 9 November 1926 in Richmond, Virginia, to Shelton Hardaway Short, Jr., (1898-1974) and Bessie Morton Goode Jeffreys Short (1899-1977). He grew up in Chase City, Virginia, and graduated from Chase City High School. After serving in the army air corps, he attended and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1948. Short received MAs from International College of Elsinod and the University of Nevada-Reno, and received a ph.d. in history from the University of Edinburgh in 1969. In 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from Randolph-Macon College. Short taught in the classroom of several colleges and universities and worked on forestland and wildlife habitat, managing over 5000 acres of woodland. He established scholarships at Virginia Tech and at Randolph-Macon College. Short married Jean Snyder Renner 25 November 1989 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Short died in Clarksville, Virginia, 30 July 2005.
