John Chowning Towles (1834-1921) was the son of William Henry Towles (1803-1836) and Keturah George Towles (1801-) of Lancaster County, Virginia. He was a farmer and oysterman in Lancaster County and served with Company D, 9th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, during the Civil War.
