Biographical or historical data
Landon Cabell Garland was born 21 March 1810 at "The Grove" in Nelson County, Virginia, to Spotswood Garland and Lucinda Garland. He attended Hampden-Sidney College, graduating in 1829. After his graduation, Garland taught at Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, until 1832, when he accepted a position of professor of natural philosophy at Randolph-Macon College. He taught until 1836, when he became president of the college, serving in that position until he resigned because of health in 1846. In 1847, he began teaching at the University of Alabama and served as its president from 1855 to 1865. Garland raised funds to restore the university's buildings which were destroyed in the Civil War. He then taught at the University of Mississippi from 1867 to 1875. In 1868, at the urging of Bishop Holland McTyiere (1824-1889), Garland began writing articles for the Methodist newspaper, THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, about providing better education for Methodist ministers and having a central seminary for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Despite its controversial nature, Garland's plan helped lead to the creation of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1875. Garland became its chancellor and served until 1893, when he resigned to return to teaching. He died 12 February 1895.
