The association was organized on 11 November 1886 in Richmond, Virginia, for anyone who was a member of the "Richmond Grays" at any time from its formation on 12 June 1844 as Company A, 1st Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, to the end of the Civil War. This company became Company G. of the 12th Virginia Infantry Regiment.
