This register bears the distinction of being the earliest known extant parish register of the Colony of Virginia. Consists in part of items copied from an earlier register and in part of entries originally recorded in the present volume. Arranged as two registers, Register of Births, 1648-1789, 1800, and Register of Deaths, 1665-1787. Biographical or historical data
Charles Parish was created ca. 1635 as New Poquoson Parish in Charles River County, one of the original shires. In 1634 the name of Charles River County was changed to York County. In 1692, the name of New Poquoson Parish was changed to Charles Parish upon a petition by the parishioners to the House of Burgesses.
