This collection consists of a letter, dated 19 June 1864, from John B. Whatley, Buyckville, Alabama, to the surgeon of the general hospital, ward 6, Charlottesville, Virginia. Whatley's son, Lucius, had been killed at the battle of the Wilderness (Va.) and Whatley was inquiring about his son's death and burial site. The letter is transcribed. Also includes additional comments on the history of the hospital in Charlottesville, and a physician at the hospital, John Staige Davis

Biographical or historical data
Lucius L. Whatley (1832-1864) of Coosa County, Alabama, served with the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment, and was killed at the battle of the Wilderness, Va. Whatley is probably buried at the Confederate cemetery at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.
