Biographical or historical data
Peter Francisco was born 9 July 1760, probably in the Azores Islands. Apparently kidnapped at age five, he was left on the wharf at City Point, Virginia, in 1765. He was cared for by Judge Anthony Winston of Buckingham County. Francisco never received an education. After the Revolution began, Francisco enlisted in the 10th Virginia Regiment in 1776, and served with the Continental Army in New York and Pennsylvania. He received attention for his strength and bravery. In 1779 he returned to Buckingham County, then enlisted in the Virginia Militia. He again gained a reputation for extraordinary feats against the British army. Francisco served under the Marquis de Lafayette at the siege of Yorktown in 1781. After the war, he returned to Buckingham County and became a farmer. In 1825, he was appointed the sergeant-at-arms of the House of Delegate, a position which he held until his death. Francisco married first Susannah Anderson in December 1784, and they had three children. He married second Catherine Fauntleroy Brooke (1762-1821) 8 December 1794, and they had four children. He married third Mary Beverley Grymes (1782-1859) and they had no children. Francisco died 16 January 1831 in Buckingham County.
