Letters, 1863-1864, concerning John Strother Pendleton (1802-1868) of Culpeper County, Virginia, consisting of: a) a letter from Captain J. H. Boughan (b. ca. 1832) of the quartermaster's department to an unidentified recipient concerning furniture stored at John Strother Pendleton's farm and damaged by Union soldiers, army politics between "Extra Billy" Smith and Jubal Early, and his cattle in Culpeper County; and b) a letter from Joseph Jackson, Jr., to John Strother Pendleton informing Pendleton that he (Jackson) has been appointed agent to record damages by Union troops and asking Pendleton to assist him in determining damages in Culpeper County. Biographical or historical data
John Strother Pendleton was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, 1 March 1802 to William Pendleton (1779-1824) and Ann Strother Pendleton (1784-1819). He studied law and was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1824 and began practicing in Culpeper County. Pendleton served in the Virginia House of Delegates between 1830 and 1833 and between 1836 and 1839. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Whig and served from 1845 to 1849. Pendleton also served in the state department as Chargé dʾAffaires to Chile from 1841 to 1844 and as Chargé dʾAffaires to Argentina from 1851 to 1854. Pendleton helped negotiate a treaty of commerce with Paraguay and Uruguay in 1852. He returned to Culpeper county and became a successful farmer. He married Lucy Ann Williams (d. 1872), and they had no children. Pendleton died 19 November 1868 and was buried at his home "Redwood."
