Typed transcript of the diaries, 1786-1799, of Francis Taylor (1747-1799) of Orange County, Virginia, consisting of thirteen volumes, one for each year. There is no volume for 1793. Entries concern Taylor's agricultural, business, and social interests. Taylor describes the planting and harvesting of crops, the care of livestock, and the labor of slaves at his brother's, his father's, and his own plantations in Orange County. Taylor details his work as deputy clerk for the Orange County Court and his business dealings related to his agricultural and personal interests. He records details of the social life of Orange County, especially of his family, the Barbour, Burnley, Madison, and Pendleton families. Taylor records the births, marriages, and deaths among his family and friends. Taylor also comments on presidential, congressional, and state elections in Orange County, including James Madison's (1751-1836) election to various offices

Biographical or historical data
Francis Taylor was born 20 March 1747 to George Taylor (1711-1792) and Rachel Gibson Taylor (1717-1761). He served as a captain in the 2nd Virginia Regiment during the American Revolution. After the war, he returned to his family's home in Orange County, Virginia, where he served as deputy clerk of Orange County Court under his brother James Taylor. Francis Taylor inherited his father's plantation "Midland" in 1792. Never married, Taylor died in Orange County between 23 November 1799 which is the last entry of his last diary, and 23 December 1799 when his will was proved in Orange County Court.
