This is a recording of a presentation made in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Virginia Council of Churches Roundtable. The participants are Dr. Roland P. Riddick, pastor of Park Place Methodist Church in Norfolk and retiring president of Va. Council of Churches; The Honorable Baldwin G. Locker, member of the Virginia General Assembly from Rockbridge County and Buena Vista and incoming president of the Council; Dr. Minor C. Miller, longtime Executive Secretary of the Council; Bishop Frederick Deane Goodwin, past president of the Council; the Reverand Clarence M. Brown, director of Public Relations and Youth Work of the Council; and moderator Holland R. Wilkinson (1893-1954) of WRVA's Sunshine Hour. Bishop Goodwin gives a history of the Council, and Dr. Riddick discusses the organization's work from 1952. Baldwin Locker discusses the planned projects for 1953. Minor C. Miller is asked about the accomplishments of the organization and the promotion of the observances of the publication of the revised Standard Bible across the state, the training of all kinds of church workers in the communities, weekday religious education, and the group's Youth Council. Lastly, Clarence E. Brown talks in slightly more detail regaring "the young people" in the group

Biographical or historical data
  • In 1882 the first meeting of the Virginia State Sunday School Union occured in Petersburg. This group grew in size and interest so that in 1928 Council of Religious Education was established. Various other cooperative groups of Christian organizations joined with these in 1945 to form the Virginia Council of Churches.
  • Frederick Deane Goodwin was born in Albemarle County on 5 November 1888. He attended Episcopal High School, The College of William and Mary, and the Virginia Theological Seminary, from where he graduated in 1917. Goodwin became the ninth bishop of Virginia on 1 January 1944. He died in Wheeling, West Virginia, on 13 January 1968, and is buried in the Yeocomico Episcopal Church Cemetery in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Minor C. Miller was born on 6 January 1889. He attended Bridgewater College, Boston University, and Ashland College in Ohio. He was a professor at Bridgewater from 1949-1953. Miller was executive secretary of the Virginia Council of Religious Education and the Virginia Council of Churches. He died in July 1968.
