Summary
Miscellaneous records, 1828-1890, of various railroads, chiefly composed of scattered correspondence from customers, other railroad companies, and citizens concerned about the railroads' impact on their towns and property. Other items include receipts, stock certificates, rate tables, and documents pertaining to lawsuits and relevant legislation. Reel 4580 holds records from a number of railroads, including the Baltimore and Ohio; Cumberland Valley; Raleigh and Gaston; Greenville and Columbia; Norfolk and Petersburg; Western and Atlantic; and Alexandria and Washington lines. There are only a handful of documents pertaining to any particular railroad company, and the records overall do not bear any obvious relation to one another. Reel 4581 is more formally organized, broken into five sections representing the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac; Orange and Alexandria; Virginia and Tennessee; Farmville and Powhatan; and Richmond and Alleghany lines. The Richmond and Alleghany section also contains extensive minutes from meetings of the Atlantic and Northwestern Railroad Company board
